Exclamation!

I received word over the weekend that “Apotheosis Cake” was chosen for the Every Day Fiction Best of 2009″ Anthology!

Erin is featured as well, with a staggering four stories. I think that might be it for the Writer’s Inkers this time around – we had a fairly light presense on EDF this year compared to last year.

EDIT: Oop, apparently Jens and Stephanie are in as well! Yay! Perhaps we can do that book signing we tried to put together last year?

The full list hasn’t been posted yet, but I expect a lot of familiar names to be featured. It really is a great anthology. If you missed last year’s you can still find it at Amazon or order it directly from the good folks at EDF.

I’m seriously considering making the trip up north this time to make the launch party. I think it would be a blast. I’ll just have to see if I can put the money together for the trip. I’ve never been to the barren tundras of Canada before, though. Do they have cars up there? Should I bring my own food? Or perhaps a weapon with which to hunt for game (and if so, will the natives be frightened of gunpowder)? Someone let me know.

Slushie

Since KC has abandoned her post (I kid, I kid, KC!), Every Day Fiction is looking for a new slush reader. If you love to read and critique, and want learn a little bit about how the publishing biz works, you should consider volunteering. I understand it’s actually a highly valuable experience. I would, but I hesitate to commit to something like that – I’m not sure I would have the time. Maybe at the beginning of the year, when work is less busy.

Rocking On

So far I’m doing well on my new goal to submit a story a month – I put some polish on “With the Band” and sent it over to Every Day Fiction. It’s a fun story, so I hope they like it.

The month is still young!

I’m torn on what to do with “Invasion of the Moonians.” It’s basically a talking head story, and I don’t know how interesting those really are for flash. I may just post the whole of it here sometime and not worry about sending it out. Or I may take the material and rework it into something more exciting. We’ll see.

On a sad note, RIP John Hughes. His high school movies are the ones people always talk about, but my favorites came after that, with John Candy in particular. Hell, I even watched Career Opportunities (who can forget Jennifer Connelly on the rocking horse?). I couldn’t tell you how many times I watched Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off when I was a kid.

So as tribute, one of my favorite scenes, from one of my favorite movies.

Output: Pitiful

Every Day Fiction is in the process of selecting stories for the Best of 2009 Anthology (there’s a thread about it here – if you haven’t already, feel free to check out my last couple of stories published there, maybe comment/rate them, and if you have a forum account feel free to mention me). I think “Apotheosis Cake” might be worth putting in there, but I won’t be surprised if I get left out.

What the nomination thread has really made me realize is that my output this year has really not been very good. Most of the other writers listed in the nomination thread have got a good half dozen stories to pick from. Jens and Stephanie are pumping out novels faster than I’m getting flash pieces done, and Erin has created an entire new person, from scratch. There is no excuse!

I’ve worked on far fewer prompts this year, and out of the couple of stories I’ve had published recently (or soon-to-be-published), at least one of them was actually written last year. I’ve more or less decided not to attempt NaNo this year, in the interest of getting something done instead of wasting a month, but really I’ve been wasting most of this year. I feel stagnant.

To my credit, most of the stories I submit get accepted within a couple of attempts. It would be nice to say that I’m just exacting and have high standards for myself, but it’s really just because I’ve actually only finished a handful of stories this year, and the few I have submitted just happened to hit the right editors at the right time.  I should be getting a steady stream of unfortunate and regretful form letters. But I’m not because I’m simply not sending out enough submissions. I have a ton of half-finished stories laying around doing nothing for me. There’s no reason I shouldn’t have a piece in Every Day Fiction every month or so, or in every issue of A Thousand Faces or 10Flash. I should be working on podcast stories, too, an area I would love to get into.

So starting in August, I’m going to start pumping out the short fiction, as much as I can manage. I’m setting a goal of submitting at least one finished short piece a month (whether it’s flash or longer works). That doesn’t seem like much, but for me it’s a huge jump in productivity. I need to get this discipline down before I attempt a novel again.

The whole purpose of setting up this blog to begin with was to force myself to write more and on a regular basis. It worked well for a while, but I’ve slacked off these past few months. Time to get back on track.

Listen to me, I sound like Charlie Brown, gearing up to take another run at Lucy and that damn football.Charlie Brown, art by Charles Schulz, of course

Sorry about the rambling. Gay has a great post about this sort of thing over at the Flash Fiction Chronicles that pretty well mirrors how I’m feeling at the moment. Here’s to rejection!

The Squeeze

Greetings from the distant past (last Tuesday)!

My latest flash piece, “The Squeeze,” should be live on Every Day Fiction right about now. Check it out if you haven’t already! Comment! Vote! Tell your friends (and enemies – I have nothing against evil support).

It’s an odd story, one that you’ll probably either totally get and think is hilarious, or not get at all and think I’m insane. I’m not sure which demographic I envy more. So it’ll be interesting to see the reaction.

For Jordan

Just to aim for the most annoying story possible for Jordan over at Every Day Fiction:

#

Hospital bills for broken rib: $800

Therapy costs for traumatized child: $300  an hour

Ginsu knife to make sure the bastard never does it again: priceless

#

I expect my acceptance notice shortly. ;)

Edit: oops, just realized I went with “abusive spouse” rather than “cheating spouse.” That, clearly, calls for an entirely different story.

#

Magnifying glass to spot the glitter and mysterious blond hairs: $25

Private detective fees to confirm suspicions: $150 an hour

Ginsu knife to make sure the bastard never does it again: priceless

Leopold’s Monocle

Check out friend Stephanie’s new flash piece over at EDF. It is delightful! It’s even based on one of the prompts I provided a few months ago.

Update! It seems Steph isn’t the only one. Check out Virginia’s Six Sentence story here.

The Squeeze

Every Day Fiction in it’s infinite wisdom has accepted a new flash piece from me entitled “The Squeeze.” It’s another light, humorous piece. They had me do some rewriting on it, and it came out much better afterward. It comes in under 300 words, but packs potent amusement (but probably only for certain demographics – we shall see)!

Thanks to Stephanie for helping me with a final tweak that was bothering me!

Expect to see it sometime in May, I would guess.

No single blog can contain him!

The good folks over at Every Day Fiction have created a new branch of their site, a blog for writers to write about writing. I offered up an article for today’s entry, so you can cruise over to there if you’d like.

http://www.everydayfiction.com/flashfictionblog/

If you have anything you’d like to say about writing, feel free to submit! They are voracious for content! And keep an eye on that space, I will likely have more to add there in the future.

Aftershocks spikes

Looks like some of my friends and family got around to checking out my little mystery story over at Every Day Fiction, because it has suddenly leapt into not one but two of the Top Stories categories there. They recently revised their Top Stories lists to cover only the Top 10, but in several different categories. “Crush” fell out, but “Aftershocks” has hopped up to the low tiers of their “Current” and “By Rating.” I’m trying to think of a way to get more quote marks in this paragraph, but I’m not sure it’s possible.

I have been quite lazy of late, but I will get back to work. New prompt contest this month, so maybe I’ll get something mildly interesting posted up here soon. I also still need to submit a couple of stories I have laying around. But it’s been at least a month since I wrote them, so now when I look at them I hate them. It’s hard to work up enthusiasm for stories when you do that.
