Meanwhile…

Who’s got two thumbs and just showed up on the December table of contents over at Every Day Fiction? This guy.

It is – and I say this completely without exaggeration – the greatest collection of short fiction that has ever been crafted in the history of human history. So you should buy it.

Saw The Green Hornet over the weekend. It’s actually not bad. I had little knowledge of the Green Hornet and Kato before, other than they exist, so I went in with no expectations and low standards. What most impressed me about the movie was that though Kato was the bad-ass, the script managed to stay on track with the Hornet’s story – it’s his moral arc that drives the plot forward. Fun stuff. Eleven-year-old nephew Logan thought it was the greatest thing he’d ever seen (however, he also laughed uproariously at the trailer for the next Big Momma flick, so we take these things with a grain of salt).

My nephew, however, has no idea who Bruce Lee is. This is something I must rectify.

In other, totally awesome news, I have been informed that With the Band will be included in Every Day Fiction’s Third Best of Anthology (er, their third anthology, not their anthology of third-best stories, hah!). I’ve been so busy lately I didn’t even realize they were putting the anthology together (though it is that time of year) or that I had a story eligible. This is a nice little surprise after a year that was, overall, a very dismal writing period for me.

In other other totally awesome news, I have a pretty solid fantasy story written that I’ll be submitting to the writing group for crits, probably tonight after a few tweaks. Clocking in around 2,600 words, it’s new ground for me, as I haven’t written nearly as much fantasy as someone with my background should.

At any rate, I predict success for this story. I’ll need to blow the dust off my Duotrope account. We shall see!

I’m delighted to present “Aftershocks: The Musical” over at Everyday Fiction. I kid, I kid. It is, however, an audio reading of the story, read by M. Sherlock of the UK’s own Storm the Gates.

Sherlock enjoyed chewing me out a little for writing a story with such difficult names, and deservedly so. I can check “get called a git by a real Briton” off my bucket list. Next: Piss off Alan Moore with a film adaptation of Captain Britain.

Anyway, you should go give it a listen, even if maybe you read the story back in the day. Audio podcast markets are something I’d like to penetrate more, when I get around to it. I never seem to have something that’s the right length.

Speaking of Every Day Fiction, they have recently added a podcast page for their stories. I have someone working on one of my stories even as you read this! So look for that sometime soon.

In writing news, I have been working on a new superhero story. I’m digging the beginning and may post an excerpt this week. It’s high time I wrote a story about a superhero who’s a bit of a jackass. I’m also drawing on some stories of friends’ experiences in Hollywood. Should be fun! It’s been way too long since I’ve actually finished something, so I really want this story to happen.

The second Every Day Fiction Anthology is out, featuring my story, “Apotheosis Cake,” as well as stories from Erin, Jens, Stephanie, KC, Gay, Frank, Kevin, and a whole slew of other great writers. I unfortunately can’t make the official release party/reading in Canada (next weekend, I believe – if you’re in the Vancouver area you should check it out). But, I will be attempting to organize a local reading and signing, since there are several of us locally who have stories in the book. I didn’t get much response from the big booksellers last year, but I have found a local bookstore that might be amenable. Now that I have info on the book I’ll head over there sometime and see about scheduling an event.

Update – I immensely enjoy that Jim Hartley left a curmudgeonly “get off my lawn, damn kids!”-style comment. It fits the story perfectly.

After a minor rewrite, “With the Band” has been accepted by Every Day Fiction! It’s a fun story, I think. There is a band, and someone is with it. More info on publication date when I know it!
